This is going to be much shorter then my usual blogs. I just wanted to inform everyone that March is Traumatic Brain Injury awareness month. I am going to try and post some facts about TBI. I encourage you to read up on it. There are many ways that someone can get TBI, tumors, strokes, accidents, shaken baby...none of these reasons are the victims fault. This is one of the hardest things that we have ever dealt with...and it is not by choice. The major thing about TBI is it doesn't go away. It is something that Michael will have to deal with forever, even when he seems all back to normal.
I have already learned through this that you really can't judge anyones behavior without knowing them personally. (my opinion) Having a special needs child is something in itself. (I am speaking from what I have heard, not what I have gone through because we are not at this point in recovery yet) But one stage of TBI is anger...mood swings....just pure hatefulness. This happens in a huge percent of TBI victims. When we were at rehab I saw people so angry and hateful, I was told that it is a stage that almost everyone goes through, they can't help it. But it is hard on everyone. I also know that when Michael is back to normal he will still get overwhelmed by noises and he will still need tons of breaks. He may have behavior issues. He may have social issues. And the problem is, once you can't see his scar anymore, once he starts walking and talking, people who don't know what he has gone through may just think he isn't a nice person, or may think that he is weird...they don't know or understand where he came from. So the next time you want to judge someone for their behavior...just remember you don't know their story! (I know this isn't the case for everyone, problem is...you don't know)
